What to expect

Going anywhere for the first time can be a bit daunting. So here’s a quick summary of the kind of things you can expect at St Thomas's, Osbaldwick and St James's, Murton.

A Big Welcome!

Whether you’re new to the area and looking for a church – or you’re completely new to church or the Christian faith – then you’ll find a big welcome at our churches. Here you’ll find answers to some of the most frequent questions that people ask us. However if your question isn’t answered below or you just want to know more then please contact us. We will be delighted to hear from you!

Who Are We?

Our churches welcome people of all ages and backgrounds, from young people, singles and families through to the elderly. We’re friendly and are a great place to be for anyone looking for a spiritual 'home’ where they’ll be made to feel welcome.

Do I Have To Be A Believer?

No. Faith is a journey and we welcome people at St Thomas's and St James's wherever they are on that journey. The fact that you have followed this link probably means you are interested in exploring the Christian faith and have both questions and doubts; all of which are a good thing! No one is going to quiz or pressurise you. The space is yours; you are welcome to go at your own pace. If you would like to chat to one of our Clergy team at any point just pop us an email and we will be in touch.

Welcome to St Thomas's Osbaldwick and St James's Murton

When Are Our Services Held?

If you’re new to the church, probably the best way to start is with our Sunday morning service which begins at 10am at St Thomas's.

What To Wear

Just wear whatever you feel comfortable in. We are a very informal church and accept people just as they are.

What To Expect

First of all, you’ll receive a warm, friendly welcome. Our Churchwardens can introduce you to people you can sit with and who can tell you more about the church or you’re welcome to sit on your own. If you don’t understand something or want to know more, please just ask.

Whether you’re just looking into Christianity for the first time or have been a Christian for many years, it’s our aim that you will be welcomed, encouraged and inspired. By being part of St Thomas's and St James's Churches, we hope you will draw closer to God – and make new and lasting friendships.

What We Believe

We are a Christian church and believe that everyone can have relationship with God. We believe this relationship is possible because of Jesus - God’s only Son - who invites us to follow Him. If you are interested in exploring the Christian faith then please come along on a Sunday or contact us for more information.

Is It Just Sundays?

Absolutely not! God is with us all week long, so you’ll find there’s always something going on. At the present time our services and other meetings and events are restricted but we intent to re-introduce these in the coming weeks and months.

Am I Expected To Come Every Week?

No; you are welcome to come as often as you like. Weekly, monthly, occasionally – find a pattern that suits you. No one keeps a register!

Am I Expected To Give Money?

No, you are welcome at St Thomas's and St James's whether you give or not. However, you might feel you would like to give to the work of the Church and we would be delighted to receive your donation. Although there is a collection during all our services, many of our regular worshippers prefer to give by a standing order. This way they can Gift Aid their donation, and this gives the church an extra 28p for every £1 donated by a UK tax payer.

For Disabled People

We aim to be an all-inclusive church. Our churches are wheelchair accessible and there are fully wheelchair accessible toilets at both St Thomas's and St James's. If you have specific needs and would like to talk to us, please contact us and we will answer any questions that you have.
