June 2014 - Where is Jesus Now?

Christians follow Jesus, who came to earth, lived, died and rose again about 2000 years ago. During his life on earth Jesus taught, did mighty works and died on a cross. Then he rose again and returned to his heavenly glory, which he had to leave behind to come here. He 'emptied himself', as the Bible says and is now exalted and glorious in heaven.

But where is Jesus now? Has Jesus left us alone? Is he just a figure of the distant past? By no means! Before he returned to glory Jesus promised that he would come again to his followers in another form until he comes again at the end of time. What is this way of coming? It is by his sending the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to be with us always. That is what the Church celebrates at Pentecost - Whit Sunday - 8th June this year. Jesus kept his promise to send the Spirit from the Father.

The Holy Spirit is the life and power of the Church - from earliest times, now and forever. His coming is described in the Acts of the Apostles as being in wind and fire:

Wind - to refresh and empower them, to send them out into the world to proclaim the Good News of Jesus;
Fire - to warm and energize, to give them light and guidance.

It is the Holy Spirit who brings Jesus to us, so that he is no longer in one place at one time but in every place and every time. The Spirit makes Jesus known today and gives us all we need to do God's loving will, to show Jesus to a world that desperately needs to hear the Good News of God's love in Jesus for everyone.

So we are never left alone, however difficult things may seem. God's Spirit is always with us to bring Jesus to us here and now with comfort, guidance and power. The Spirit fulfills Jesus' last promise on earth:
"I am with you always, to the end of time." (Matthew 28: 20)

May God bless you all
