January 2014 - A New Year's People
The last year seems to have flown and what of the New Year? This particular year, one hundred years after the First World War started, we will hear lots about this as the year unfolds and I am reminded of a verse of Isaac Watts’s well known hymn “O God our help in ages past”. It goes like this, “Time, like an ever-rolling stream bears all its sons away; they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.”
Of course Isaac Watts was thinking about mankind’s frailty compared to the eternity of God but he was wrong in one respect. Time is a neutral concept yet what we do with it can give it that positive charge that makes it memorable. This is particularly so with people who have faith and place their trust in the eternal nature of God. Great people are not remembered for longevity but what they did with the time given to them. You may say that I speak only of the “great and the good” but in my mind are also people of all races, creeds and classes who have shaken hands with time, giving it a positive and constructive charge.
The New Year is an opportunity for us all to give a wonderful gift – our time and effort to each other. When we do this our community benefits and nothing and no one is forgotten by God who gave us time to bring in his kingdom right here.
A very happy New Year to you all.
