February 2012 - 2012 - What a Year!!
2012 AD is packed full of celebrations and anniversaries. First, there is the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen – 60 years’ reign completed on 6th February. That is the official day – Accession Day – but the main celebrations will take place in June. There has not been a Monarch’s Diamond Jubilee since 1897. Then in July and August there will be the Olympic Games in London and elsewhere, when all the world will seem to be in the UK, celebrating world sporting excellence and co-operation.
Nearer home, 2012 marks the York 800 Celebration, for it was on 9th July 1212 that King John granted York the right to govern itself. There will be much to enjoy for York and its citizens. In 2012 the world famous York Mystery Plays will be put on by the city’s guilds and companies during August. This will again attract great numbers and much interest in our famous city.
2012 marks the 350th anniversary of the Book of Common Prayer (1662). There will be much celebration over that great book.
2012 also marks the centenary of the sinking of the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic and of Robert Scott’s heroic, tragic expedition to the South Pole. Much interest will be focused on those events, no doubt.
Right here in our parish we shall begin to celebrate the re-building and re-dedication of Murton Church (after many years in ruin) with a three year programme, culminating in November 2014 – more later!
Whichever of these interests you and whatever hopes and plans you have for 2012 – may God bless you and keep you always in his love.
Andrew Clements, Vicar
