December 2016 - The Inextinguishable Light.
In the northern hemisphere Christmas comes at the darkest time of the year, with the shortest days. Our world so often seems dark with dangers, cruelty, wars and disasters.
'What is God doing?' we may well ask. God's answer is not a slick reply or a theory, but a person. God came among us in person, in Jesus, his own Son, born the first Christmas so long ago. Jesus came out of love, to share all our lives and to bring us back to God.
Jesus was the first and best Christmas present, born just like us, born as a baby. He became like us so that we might become like him in love and have Eternal Life.
The Christmas story, which is the reason for all our celebrations - the reason there is a Christmas - is the love story of God sharing our lives so that we might share his Heavenly Life. Jesus came to give this dark world the light of love, truth and goodness. After 2000 years this truth still holds and guides our lives.
St. John's Gospel, describing that first Christmas, says 'The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it.' The darkness of this world has never, and will never, extinguish or put out that light of God which we see in Jesus, the Light of the World.
Whatever has happened this year and however we keep Christmas, let us hold on to that great truth - and celebrate!
As we celebrate God's light of love this Christmas, let us live in that light of love and share that light with all others.
Happy Christmas! - and may God bless you all.
