Pastoral Care

Our wish as a Parish is to help people to feel the love and compassion of God, whether church-goers or not. Our churches are open every day, offering peace and quiet, and anyone wanting pastoral or personal help is welcome to contact the Vicar or the Reader to arrange a private and confidential meeting. God cares about every part of our lives; if it matters to you, it matters to us.

If requested, arrangements can be made with the Vicar for individuals to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) and for personal consultation on spiritual direction.

Our work with the Elderly

Pastoral CarePastoral care for the elderly living in our Parish is a very important part of our work. Within the Parish is the Nursing Home called Meadowbeck. Along with other local churches we visit the residents at least once a week and conduct services at least twice a month. We also have a church visiting scheme to help the housebound maintain contact with the community, with home communions offered on the first Wednesday of each month. If you have an elderly relative who wishes to be visited at home, or would like us to make a special visit to Meadowbeck, please contact the Vicar or the Reader who will be only too pleased to help.

There is a Drop-In social occasion on the first, third and fifth Thursdays in the month from 10 am to 12 noon in St Thomas’s Church. Coffee, tea and juices are served and all ages are welcome.

It is a very informal occasion and a great way to meet old friends and to make new ones. People who have been bereaved have found this a good group for company and have appreciated the support.

So when you next feel like some good company, why not just Drop-In? If you would like further information, please do get in touch with Norma Carman.

Parish Fellowship

Parish Fellowship is a social opportunity to listen to visiting speakers and to chat with friends or make new ones. Meetings are held monthly and are open to all. Speakers entertain with a wide range of topics (for example Marie Curie nursing, historical aspects of York, Ascot at York Races) and there is always time for a cup of tea and a chat.

Meetings are usually held on the last Tuesday of the month at 7.00pm in St Thomas’s. There is a small charge of £2.00 to cover expenses and to help fund the special meetings.

Information about dates and speakers can be found in the Parish Link or in the Notices section.

Enquiries are very welcome, to Joyce Taylor.

Pastoral Care Group

The church also has a Pastoral Care Group, which maintains a regular contact with all church-goers. If anyone is going into hospital and would like a visit there or a visit at home, please contact the Vicar, the Reader or Norma Carman.
