January 2011 - A Walk With God

At this juncture in the cycle of time my mind nearly always recalls the words of Minnie Louise Haskin; ‘And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a light that I may tread safety into the unknown.” And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way”.

The future is always uncertain, tinged with happiness and unhappiness alike. How to deal with it? A great Buddhist teacher wrote, ‘What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow; our life is the creation of our mind’. It seems to me, though, that if our present thoughts are centered on the light of the world, Jesus Christ, then it will create a mind which will understand what Jesus meant when he said, “Do not worry about what you shall eat or what you shall wear, seek first [God’s] Kingdom and all these things will be given to you as well. Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own“.

Perhaps our New Year’s resolution should be, to always seize the moment, make it count and make the best of it; never wasting such a precious gift. However to succeed this does require you and me to place our trust in one who knows the path we travel even before we step foot upon it.

May we all walk in the way of God throughout 2011.
