March 2016 - Choice
An ancient Hebrew script says, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life”. A fairly obvious and easy choice it would at first appear but which choice are you actually making?
During the month of March we think about the suffering of Jesus culminating in his crucifixion, and about his resurrection, death and life. Perhaps the Hebrew writer got it wrong and transposed the words life and death, which seems the more natural way of things. However before making your choice, know that the writer refers to eternal life and eternal death. Some in our modern world try to tell us that this life is all we have and would cleave the cross from the resurrection, leaving us with no choice at all. We must, they will argue, “eat, drink and be merry, for the morrow we die”. Yet Jesus said that “I came that we might have life and have it more abundantly”.
So again the choice is eternal death or eternal life but we must not make our choice out of ignorance. Christ’s resurrected life does not come only after our death; some sort of reward for living this life well. We are, because of Christ, already a resurrected people with eternal aspect. So we should live all of life in joyful thanksgiving because this makes sense of our blessings and our curses.
It makes sense of what Jesus said, “I come that you might have life and have it more abundantly”. So choose life and live it as an eternal Easter people in care, love and joy.
A Happy Easter to you all.
