August 2017 - The Weather!
Let us have a discussion about the weather. I was at the supermarket checkout the other day and the first thing the lady said was, “why does it always rain in York?” I pointed out that I am quite sun tanned and haven’t been outside Yorkshire. The conversation turned to payment. For many the weather is either too hot, or too cold, too dry or too wet, but is always something worth talking about.
We talk about global warming and its unpredictability when we live on a planet whose weather cycles have been ever changing for the last four and a half billion years. Yet this awesomeness never stops us having a ‘knowledgeable’ chat about the weather.
An Old Testament prophet called Isaiah, when reflecting on the power of God the creator, wrote this: “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth…. so is my word that goes forth from my mouth. It will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
Which all leaves me wondering, why do we spend so much time talking about something over which we have very little knowledge and control and so little time talking about how the loving creator Christ-like God can achieve his loving purposes through us to enrich our lives and that of each other?
May God’s bounty shine on us.
