April 2016 - Meet the Archbishop
Many readers of our Parish Link will have heard and seen in the media that the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, is making a Pilgrimage of Prayer, Witness and Blessing all over the Diocese of York. He started in December and finishes on Trinity Sunday, 22nd May. The Archbishop is walking his way through all 23 deaneries! He comes to walk in our Deanery of Derwent from Tuesday 12th to Sunday 17th April and will be walking in this parish on Thursday 14th. Please see page 4 for further details of his day here.
Although, as far as we know, no Archbishop of York has done this before, this is not really a new thing. He seeks to copy the example of the great missionary saints of many centuries ago, who walked out - or occasionally rode - and met people, just as they were on the road, to talk to them, encourage them in the Christian Faith and to bless them. So far the Archbishop has walked in the Cleveland area, and is now in the East Riding. There has been much interest and many encouraging encounters.
A great deal of work and careful preparation has been made for his walk, as we want it will be abundantly blessed by God for the benefit of everyone involved. If you would like to meet him, just come along to the Pilgrimage Prayers at 9am or 5pm in St Thomas' Church on Thursday 14th or stand on the road as he comes - times are approximate, of course.
May God bless you all this Eastertide with his love, joy and peace in Jesus Christ.
