On the afternoon of Sunday 9th March a special Lent service was held at Murton church. Among those present were three members of the John Straker charity trustees - Mr Alan Johnson, Mrs Elizabeth Wilson and the Revd. Dianne Cox. After the service Professor David Waddington explained about our hopes for fabric development at Murton church. Mr Johnson spoke about the life and work of John Straker in the 17th century, who at one time lived in Murton before moving to York. John Straker was a benefactor of numerous places in the city and area including Murton and Osbaldwick. Mr Johnson then presented a cheque for £600 to the Centenary Development Fund for which he was warmly thanked. After this the congregation were kindly invited to Murton Hall for refreshments.

We are very grateful for this financial help and for all the contributions which have been made so far. Towards £20,000 has been raised in the last two years through the gallant work of the Centenary Committee and all supporters. This is very encouraging but we still have a long way to go to raise enough funds to install a kitchenette and build a toilet, which is our vision for opening up the church to the community more effectively. More details will follow in time.
